Context

The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (also known as ATSE) is a Learned Academy of independent experts helping Australians understand and use technology to solve complex problems. They bring together Australia’s leading experts in applied science, technology and engineering to provide impartial, practical and evidence-based advice on how to achieve sustainable solutions and advance prosperity.

THE brief

To identify what the best practice governance models for Australian and international learned academies are, along with their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, identifying what the governance characteristics are of high performing learned academies.

The approach

Complete a desk review of the online governance documentation for ATSE and other academies. Interviews with appropriate leaders of all academies to identify strengths and weaknesses. Prepare a draft report focused on the issues to assist in addressing how best to resolve these issues.

results

A detailed report that provided analysis and recommendations based on the comparison of key governance processes. These recommendations were ultimately approved for implementation and supported by the leadership and membership of ATSE.
