Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA)

context

AIDA is a not-for-profit, member-based professional association supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors and medical students. Their purpose is to contribute to equitable health and life outcomes and the cultural wellbeing of Indigenous people. They do this by working towards reaching population parity of Indigenous medical students and doctors, and supporting a culturally safe healthcare system.

AIDA’s vision is for an Australia free from health and life outcome inequities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Indigenous health innovation exemplifies excellence in health and leads the nation in improving health and life outcomes for all Australians.
— AIDA Vision Statement

the brief

Conscious Governance was engaged to carry out a governance review and governance support. This included a strategic governance audit, a board performance review including director interviews, and a board skill matrix.

The purpose was to assist the board in further strengthening their governance processes, strategic thinking, and decision making.

the approach

Conscious Governance undertook a comprehensive independent review of board processes, including board strategic processes, board structure, constitution, board and stakeholder communication, board compliance responsibilities, and strategic operational issues that directly affected their governance.

results

The board accepted the comprehensive recommendations regarding improved governance and strata focus. A detailed action plan was developed and approved by the board that included timeline priorities. The already robust governance processes were further strengthened and focused and examples, templates, as well as practical strategies were provided to facilitate the changes.
